We ordered a flat of cherry tomatoes from our vendor and got this instead. We're excited to see how this heirloom tomato turns out - growers say this one ripens sooner than other heirlooms!

Product Description

With all the varieties of tomatoes being grown and the rush to get starts out to the nurseries at the start of the summer season, it's inevitable that mistakes will happen on occasion. We received a flat of Pruden's Purple tomato starts by mistake and one of the garden rebels here at the nursery is going to see if it lives up to its reputation. This heirloom variety allegedly produces one-pound tomatoes in about 70 days with few seeds and lots of tomato flavor. No idea where the name came from because the tomatoes are not purple, but have a dark pink hue to the skin and crimson flesh.
Pruden's Purple is indeterminate, meaning that it will need a cage, trellis, or some other support for the potato-leaf vines that can grow to six feet tall. Find a sunny spot in the garden, water deeply only when the soil is dry, and don't overdo the nitrogen fertilizers; you'll end up with lots of foliage and not much fruit. Growers tip: when planting your start, plant it deep, leaving only two sets of leaves above ground, and add a couple of tablespoons of crushed eggshells and some Root Power to the hole before putting in the start. The extra calcium will help prevent blossom-end rot and the Root Power will get your tomato plant off to a good start with a low dose of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, along with   essential minerals and mycorrhizal spores.
