Conifers add wonderful texture, height, and year-round color to those sunny spots of the garden, but don't do well in the shade. Hicks Hybrid Yew may be the answer when gardeners want an evergreen presence but have only part-day sun. A cross between English and Japanese yews, Hicks Hybrid sports the good looks of English varieties and the cold hardiness of Japanese yews. Though capable of growing up to 20 feet tall, most specimens in the Pacific NW top out around 10 - 12 feet in height and two-thirds the width. Female yews produce berry-like cones, but many growers won't identify these plants as male or female.
Footnote: as so often used in murder mysteries, all parts of the yew are toxic and should not be ingested by man or beast.
