June-bearing strawberries are a great choice for home canners because of the need for lots of berries all at once. 'Totem' strawberry was bred for Pacific NW weather and given the right environment, can produce high yields of conical shaped, relatively firm berries. Ripe berries are a dark red, and are an excellent choice for jams, jellies, and sauces as well as eating fresh. Give strawberries lots of sun, fertilize when planting (ask us about Root Power!), and watch out for slugs. Mulching with straw or hazelnut shells will help deter the nasty critters and will keep strawberries off the ground. For those with limited space, consider growing strawberries in hanging baskets or container planters.
