Stevia 4 Inch

Anyone who has ever purchased stevia extract knows how expensive it is. Consider growing sweetleaf in your summer garden instead. 200 to 300 times sweeter by weight than cane sugar and with no calories, fresh stevia leaves can be steeped in water to make a liquid sweetener. Alternatively, dried leaves are much sweeter than fresh, and can be made into a tea/liquid sweetener, or dried and ground into a powder. Cutting off the white flowers as they appear will maintain the best flavor in the leaves. Native to South America, this herb is treated as an annual here in the Pacific NW, so be sure to harvest the leaves prior to the first frost.

Culinary Uses: Leaves may be used fresh to add sweetness to beverages, or steeped as a tea, and the liquid used as a sweetener. Dried leaves are even sweeter than fresh.

Harvest Time: Pluck leaves as needed. Harvest all leaves before first frost.
