Sempervivum tectorum var. calcareum

Also known as Fire Dragon Hens and Chicks, this variety has crimson tips that almost glow in contrast to the blue-green foliage. Rosettes stay low but can spread up to a foot wide, with chicks creating new plants as they root. Well draining soil is key to healthy Hens and Chicks, so consider growing them in container planters or hanging baskets. The soil around Metro Portland is often heavy clay, and that will rot out the roots of succulents in the winter.
Note: sempervivums are monocarpic, meaning that when the hens flower, they will die. The good news is, lots of chicks are there to take the hen's place!
