Sempervivum ‘Pacific Devil’s Food’

Many varieties of Hens and Chicks will change colors, season by season, often looking entirely different in the summer compared to the dead of winter. 'Pacific Devil's Food' does not "green up" in the summer and maintains red tones year-round, from chocolatey red to burgundy and bronze, depending upon the temps and length of day. Individual hens can grow to be five inches across, all the while putting out many chicks. Once the hen blooms (usually late summer to fall), it will die, making way for all the babies to fill in the space. This succulent often does better in hanging baskets and container planters, as the soil here in the Portland metro area tends to be heavy clay, and can cause roots to rot out in the winter.
