Sedum 'Wildfire'

Stonecrops are a lifesaver when it comes to areas of the landscape that receive little water during the height of summer. The key, however, is well-draining soil, so those of us gardening in the Portland Metro area need to either amend clay soil or plant sedums such as 'Wildfire' in container planters, hanging or otherwise. Why, if it's not going to get much water, you ask? Because sedums don't like soggy feet and perpetually wet clay soil in the winter may just rot out the roots. That said, 'Wildfire' can be a real show-off with its maroon and hot pink leaves that stay fairly low to the ground, creating a mat of color from spring up until freeze. Pink flower clusters in late summer to fall are an added color bonus and pollinators appreciate them!
