Sedum 'Sunsparkler Blue Elf Quart

We've seen many blue-gray stonecrops before, and all have their own charm, but this Sunsparkler Blue Elf is one-of-a-kind. A first-ever cross between a sedum and orostachys (similar to Hens and Chicks/Sempervivum), this variety tends to stay dense and compact, forming a low-growing mat three to six inches tall and over a foot wide under optimal conditions. As is true of all succulents, 'Sunsparkler Blue Elf' grows best in well-draining, not necessarily rich soil with lots of sun. It will die back in the winter, but not before putting out many clusters of red buds that open to hot pink flowers in late summer to early fall. These saucy blooms stand out against the blue foliage and allegedly smell like grape soda. Bees and butterflies love the flowers, but deer and rabbits will tend to ignore Sunsparkler Blue Elf.
