Sciadopitys verticillata 'Joe Kozey'

As those familiar with The Garden Corner know, we're all about container planters, hanging or otherwise. And maybe that's why we appreciate Japanese Umbrella Pines so much. Not the fastest growing conifer, Sciadopitys take well to large pots, due in part to their slower rate of growth. We also find the unique umbrella-shaped whorls of needles intriguing, so it's fun to place this specimen where it can be seen up close.
'Joe Kosey' is especially suited to life in a container because of its narrow profile, reaching 20 feet at maturity and spreading about six feet wide. Its branches are held more tightly to the trunk and are sturdier than the species, so it bears up under heavy snowloads. Growing about a foot a year, you may wish to move 'Joe Kosey' out into the garden after the first 10 years in a container, where it can reach its full potential.
