Salvia 'Amistad' 1 Gallon

Salvias are ubiquitous in Pacific NW gardens, appreciated for their fast growth and their ability to attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. 'Amistad,' aka Friendship sage, is a larger perennial, growing three to five feet tall and at least as wide, if not wider. A heavy bloomer from late spring up until frost, this variety has deep purple flowers that stand in stark contrast to almost black calyces, attracting hummingbirds, butterflies, pollinators, and humans. Give this salvia lots of sun and keep watered during the hot days of summer, placing it in large container planters, in the back of borders, or using several as an informal summer hedge. The fragrant leaves are a turn-off for deer most of the time, but gardeners will find the minty fragrance appealing. Deadheading spent flowers will prolong the blooming period, and light pruning in late winter to early spring will keep 'Amistad' dense and tidy.
