Salix caprea 'Pendula'

A weeping Pussy Willow may be one of those impulse buys (it IS darn cute) that could have long-reaching affects and should probably be purchased with knowledge aforethought. This is a fast-growing variety that bears the characteristic pussy willow catkins on bare stems in late winter. Growing over a foot a year, a Salix caprea 'Pendula' could outgrow a pot in one season, so be prepared to transplant it frequently or consider planting it in the ground where it could easily grow to 12-plus feet tall and eight feet wide, depending upon how/if it is pruned. When in full leaf, this Weeping Pussy Willow may resemble Cousin Itt or a very large umbrella.

Willows love water and moist soil, (they are somewhat notorious for disrupting water and/or sewer lines), so it's a logical choice for planting near ponds or in areas with poor drainage. Finally, give it lots of sun - all day if possible - for the best catkin development, and feel free to cut stems to take indoors.
