For those wanting to get away from plastic planters, terracotta pots are much more plant- and environment-friendly. Drain holes in the bottom of the pots and porous clay ensure that the soil can dry out between waterings. Bring terracotta pots in from the elements during the winter and they will last for years. If a terracotta pot does break, you can use the shards in the bottom of another planter as filler, helping with drainage (the hole doesn't get plugged).
