Mossy Soft Shield Fern, Fairy's Pillow fern, or just plain Soft Shield fern - all those common names reference the feathery, delicate looking fronds that are often tough enough to withstand our Pacific NW winters. Standing less than two feet tall and wide, this variety will definitely be noticed when used in a container planter or hanging basket, especially if it lasts through the winter unscathed. Its thickly overlapping pinnae (read leaflets) on upright fronds are certainly eye-catching, and can act as thriller and filler in a year-round shade basket. Typically ignored by deer and rabbits, Soft Shield fern does best in dappled shade or morning sun with afternoon shade.
