Staghorn or Elkhorn ferns are epiphytic, meaning they grow on trees without taking nutrients from the host plant. Rather, they obtain moisture from rainwater and nutrients from the debris that gets caught in and around the base of its fronds. Transfer this unusual looking fern to an indoor setting, and you can grow it in potting soil with good drainage, bark chips, or attach it to a board or wire frame, preferably padding it with sphagnum moss. This fern grows best in a well-lighted room with no direct sun, and prefers to be watered when the soil begins to dry. Lacking soil, mist the Staghorn fern daily, and soak it briefly once a week in water.
