Phormium tenax 'Sundowner'

New Zealand Flax has become popular as a back-of-border evergreen and informal, low-maintenance privacy hedge, but 'Sundowner' is a rock star when it comes to year-round color. Depending upon the time of year and exposure, the wide, upright blades can range from hot pink to bronze, cream, and green, all at the same time. Small specimens are great "thrillers" for container planters, but they should be moved out into the garden once they outgrow the planters in order to achieve their full potential. Our Pacific NW winters may damage the foliage but that can be cut back in early spring before new growth emerges. Drought-tolerant once established, 'Sundowner' and other New Zealand Flax all do best with deep watering during the hottest time of the year.
