Phormium tenax 'Apricot Queen'

New Zealand flax is one of those specimens that often take gardeners by surprise. One minute it's a vigorous but narrow fan-shaped plant then suddenly, or so it seems, it's gotten four to five feet wide. 'Apricot Queen' has a unique variegation of color - green, cream, and pale apricot - and yes, this variety can get that large when planted in the ground, making it a great choice for the back of borders or as an informal hedge. When grown in container planters, it develops more slowly, adding dramatic vertical interest year-round. FYI, don't count on seeing any flowers on 'Apricot Queen;' they rarely seem to bloom in our environment.
