Parthenocissus tricuspidata 'Veitchii'

Though slightly different in looks from the species of Boston Ivy that covers the walls of those "Ivy League" colleges, 'Veitchii' has the same super clinging power and will attach itself securely to walls, fences, and any surface due to its adhesive-like tips. Growing rapidly to 30 or more feet, 'Veitchii' can also serve as a ground cover on hillsides or any unsightly areas of the garden. Inconspicuous springtime flowers turn into black berries that are usually hidden by the foliage until the fall when the leaves first turn a brilliant red before dying. Although best fall color is achieved when planted in sunny locations, 'Veitchii' can handle shadier spots, providing a wall of deep green foliage from spring until fall.  
Most gardeners will need to do annual pruning of this Boston Ivy, if only to keep its growth in check and not allow it to overtake neighboring plants. Be aware that once 'Veitchii' attaches itself to a wall or fence, it is difficult to remove without leaving some damage to the surfaces.
