If only this tree were cold tolerant, it would be a happy camper in the rainy Pacific NW. Guiana chestnut, aka water chestnut, will be much happier growing indoors with temps of 65 to 75 degrees, and away from heat/cooling vents. Native to Mexican and South American estuaries and fresh water swamps, it needs regular watering (hence the species name of aquatica) and a very well-lit room. This is a relatively fast-growing houseplant, averaging six to eight feet tall indoors, though it could achieve heights of 30 feet outdoors in a warmer climate. This tree is also a popular subject for bonsai.
Under warmer growing conditions, Guiana chestnut will bloom and produce edible seeds. Young leaves may also be eaten raw in salads, so chewing pets should have no problem with Pachira aquatica.
