'Gyoku Ryu' mondo grass generally gets rave reviews from growers as a true dwarf grass, suitable as a year-round ground cover for shady areas, and even as a lawn-substitute in small patches. What most articles don't mention is the very subtle variegation on the short, narrow blades, and it's true, one wouldn't see it unless you're up close and personal, but it adds a bit of visual texture that wouldn't exist otherwise. Spreading by underground rhizomes, this is not a fast grower, so be patient and use where immediate coverage is not important. It's a wonderful filler in container planters and hanging baskets, or strategically placed in shady borders.
