Myrcianthes variegated

The name, 'Variegated Simpson's Stopper' provides little clues as to the nature of this Florida native. Here in the maritime Pacific NW, it is a rounded, three foot tall and wide shrub with small leaves in varying shades of pink, green, and white, and smell of nutmeg when crushed. Note that in its native habitat, it can develop into a tree, five to 20 feet tall and almost as wide.

Though classified as an evergreen, this specimen will benefit from added protection during our Pacific NW winters, thus making it a good candidate for a container planter that can be moved to a sheltered spot. Drought-tolerant once established, 'Variegated Simpson's Stopper' does best in full sun, though it can tolerate some shade.
