Monstera adansonii

When indoor gardeners ask for monsteras, they're usually thinking of the large, split-leaf variety that can get, well, monstrous in size. It's something of a surprise then, to realize that the Swiss Cheese vine is also a monstera with a totally different look. Oval to heart-shaped leaves that are pockmarked with oblong holes grow on a vining stem that prefers to climb up with support, but can trail from a hanging basket. We say "prefers to climb" because the leaves will typically grow larger and the stem thicker when allowed to grow up a pole or some other support, than when it simply trails downward. As is true of any monstera, the Swiss Cheese vine does best in a well-lit exposure with higher humidity and well-draining soil. This variety will stay much smaller than its monstrous cousin when grown indoors, climbing anywhere from three to eight feet tall and one to three feet wide.
