Gaillardia aristata 'Barbican Yellow Red Ring'

Barbican Yellow Red Ring' gaillardia is an awkward, if not accurately descriptive name for this Blanket Flower, for the petals of this variety's flowers do indeed form a yellow and a red ring around a dark reddish-brown eye. Does it resemble a barbican (an outer double tower used to defend a castle or walled city)? Possibly. Perhaps the growers got too caught up in the name game, because this plant speaks for itself. Eye-catching flowers start in late spring and continue right up until fall, covering a rounded mound of foliage that stands about a foot tall and wide. Sun is a must, as is well-draining soil, so amend clay soils well, or place this gaillardia in a container planter, for the healthiest plant. Blanket flowers die down to the ground when it freezes, but will return year after year.
