Fagus sylvatica 'Red Obelisk'

Red-leafed trees are not unusual here in the Pacific NW, but this European beech has deep purple foliage that warrants a double-take. Thick, wavy-edged leaves emerge a bright red in the spring, then deepen to a rich purple shade that lasts until they drop in the fall. 'Red Obelisk's' narrow profile makes it an excellent choice for a seasonal privacy barrier, but it will take time to reach its maximum height of 40 feet. Depending upon growing conditions, it may reach 10 to 15 feet tall and 3 feet wide at the 10-year mark. Water this specimen regularly and deeply throughout the growing season, and especially when the temps become extreme.
