It's hard to predict what our Pacific NW weather will be anymore, but we know Red Banana, aka Abyssinian Banana, will thrive in the summer months, putting out massive red-tinged leaves for a showy display of lush foliage. Water regularly to keep it looking its best, and choose a sunny, sheltered spot so those gloriously big leaves don't get shredded by the wind. Hardy down to 30 degrees F, Red Banana can grow from four to ten feet tall, and four to six feet wide under ideal conditions. Consider planting this beauty in a container planter so it can be brought indoors in the winter. A well-lit room with indirect sun is best and water infrequently, as it goes dormant in the fall and winter.
