Dryopteris erythrosora 'Autumn Fern'

The common name, Autumn Fern, doesn't mean this variety will necessarily be evergreen in the fall, but refers to the autumn-like coloring of the new fronds. Emerging in shades of reds/oranges/pinks, the fronds will deepen to a solid green at maturity, forming vase-shaped clumps about two to three feet tall and wide. This is a slow-growing specimen, and that makes it ideal for shade garden container planters and hanging baskets, as well as shaded borders. Though we have seen Autumn Ferns ride out Pacific NW winters in fairly good form, prolonged cold and wet will most likely damage existing fronds. Simply cut them down to the ground and new growth will appear as the weather warms.
