Crocosmia 'Babylon'

Crocosmia, aka Montbretia, may come late to the party but what a glorious entrance they make at the height of summer. 'Babylon' has reddish-orange flowers that tend to open wider than its cousins, revealing a dark eye and yellow stamens. Taller varieties of crocosmia have an unfortunate habit of leaning over and often require staking, but 'Babylon' may be short enough ("only" 18 to 30 inches tall) to avoid the flop, given full sun. Drought tolerant once established in the ground, crocosmias will need regular watering if grown in container planters. Hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators love these late bloomers, but deer and rabbits tend to avoid them.
