Chlorophytum orchidastrum Quart

If one were to look at this Fire Flash Spider Plant, aka Mandarin Plant or Green Orange Spider Plant, chances are it would be tentatively identified as a philodendron or even an aglaonema. Surprise, it's in the same family as the well-known, variegated, strap-leafed, bed-head spider plant. Totally opposite looks, right? This chlorophytum has broad, lance-shaped green leaves emerging on orangey stems, eventually forming an upright mound about 12 - 18 inches tall and up to 2 feet wide. Lots of indirect light and periodic misting will keep this specimen looking its best, with deep watering when the top soil is dry. Fire Flash Spider Plant differs from other spider plants in that it will not send out all those baby spider plants that are so easy to propagate, so it tends to be a tidier looking plant. And although spider plants are generally considered to be pet-friendly, this one is suspect, so keep out of the mouths of chewing pets.
