Beaucarnea recurvata - 2 inch

Plants are often named based upon one's perception of that plant, so while Beaucarnea <em>recurvata's  </em>long narrow fronds may remind some people of long ponytails, others are more drawn to this specimen's distinctive trunk that resembles a bottle or elephant's foot, thus all three common names of Ponytail Palm, Elephant's Foot Palm, or Bottle Palm. And it's not a palm at all, but a member of the asparagus family (and pet-friendly).
This is a slow growing houseplant, taking years to reach a height of six feet and two to three feet wide. Position it in as bright a location as possible for maximum growth and water thoroughly only when the top inch or so of the soil is dry. Its slow growth makes the Ponytail Palm a great choice to combine with other indoor plants in larger containers, but for maximum size, consider planting it in its own pot. If the fronds begin to brown at the tips and edges, the air may be too dry. Cutting the brown off only makes it worse, so mist the leaves periodically to humidify the air.
