Athyrium niponicum 'Pewter Lace'

Those familiar with Japanese Painted ferns may not believe 'Pewter Lace' is indeed such a specimen, but these photos were taken after the plants had been sitting in almost all-day sun for about two months, resulting in predominantly green fronds. Light shade, as in morning sun/afternoon shade, or all-day dappled sun will result in the best coloring, with purplish-gray/green fronds and pink midribs. The lacy, arching fronds will form a mound about 18 inches tall and wide, and may spread via underground rhizomes. This variety is deciduous, so fronds will disappear with the first freeze, to reappear again in the spring.
