Called a fern, but not, this variety does well in pots and hanging baskets, forming airy mounds of foliage with tiny thorns. Small, inconspicuous flowers bloom randomly through the spring and summer and are often followed by small red berries in the fall.
Product Description
Product Description
Often treated as an annual here in the maritime Pacific NW, Sprenger's fern can actually withstand our cold, wet winters if sheltered during the worst weather and temps stay above 20 degrees. It forms billowy mounds of needle-like foliage and does well as a filler in container planters and hanging baskets. This variety looks its best when protected from the hot afternoon sun, but does well with morning sun or all-day dappled sun. Resist the urge to stroke the "fronds" as there are tiny thorns all along the stems. Sprenger's fern can be brought indoors for the winter, then moved back outside when the weather warms up.
