Product Description
In spite of its botanical name, Arachniodes simplicior 'Variegata' has nothing to do with spiders. Its friendlier common name of East Indian Holly Fern is also a bit misleading, so just remember Variegated Holly Fern, named for the distinctive yellow midrib of each deep green, heavily dissected frond. An upright mound of these shiny attractive fronds can grow one to two feet tall and possibly three feet wide, adding an unusual color and texture to shade gardens. Plant in borders with other shade loving perennials or add to container planters or hanging baskets as a contrasting texture to summer blooming annuals. The operative word here is "shade," as Variegated Holly Fern can tolerate full shade to all-day dappled shade. Listed as semi-evergreen for the Pacific NW, it may get a bit weary looking at the coldest time of the year, but it will revive as the weather warms.
