Aeonium arboreum 'Luteovariegatum' Quart

Indoor gardeners may be familiar with dracaenas and their trait of losing older bottom leaves, eventually creating a long naked "trunk." Tree aeoniums are the same, though their leaves are fleshy and grow in a rosette form. Hybridized from succulents native to northern Africa, Aeonium arboreum 'Luteovariegatum' needs lots of light, well-draining soil, and infrequent but deep watering. It can be grown outdoors in the summer time when temps stay above 50 degrees, but it actually needs a bit of shade during the hottest time of the day. Cream-edged, green leaves form rosettes that can reach five to six inches across, and the individual plants may eventually hit three feet tall.
Aeoniums are winter blooming succulents and like hens and chicks, are monocarpic. That means when a rosette blooms, it will die. And like hens and chicks, there are usually more immature rosettes to take the spent one's place. If the long stem seems unsightly to you, consider cutting the stem close to the rosette, set aside for a few days to harden off, then replant it in well-draining soil.
