Common Polypody can handle sunny exposures, but would appreciate some shade during the hottest time of the day, and can grow on trees!
Product Description
Product Description
We tend to identify ferns as full shade lovers, but there are many varieties that fare better with some morning sun. Native to Great Britain and Ireland, Common Polypody can grow quite well in full sun there, but considering the hotter summers here in the Pacific NW, we would lean toward morning sun and afternoon shade, or all-day dappled sun. Spreading by underground rhizomes, this fern is also epiphytic, meaning it can grow on trees without any harm to the host. Leaves are rather leathery with the sori, or spores, on the undersides creating regular bumps on the surface, adding more textural interest. Allegedly evergreen, we suspect that Common Polypody will suffer during our winters and may even die back, but should return in the spring.
