Gunnera tinctoria

Giant Rhubarb is so named because its massive, heavily veined leaves resemble rhubarb foliage. This is a natural for growing next to pond edges or other wet areas of the garden, and can grow to six feet tall and six to ten feet wide. Compared to its cousin, Gunnera manicata, this specimen has shorter leaf stalks (that are just as spiky) and more rounded, deeply lobed leaves. The flower stalks are also shorter, and the dull red flower spikes are often hidden by the gigantic leaves. Gunnera does well in sun to part-sun locations but may need protection from the hottest afternoon rays. Giant Rhubarb will die down in the fall, only to emerge again the following spring.
